The film takes place in 19th century Moscow. The plot is based on the story of a provincial businessman, Savva Gennadyevich Vasilkov, who has strong feelings for the beautiful Lidiya Yuryevna Cheboksarova.
In order to get the opportunity to meet her, he turns to his friend named Telyatev for help.
Realizing that Lydia is only interested in wealthy men, Telyatev and his friend Glumov decide to play a cruel joke on her and her mother Nadezhda Antonovna.
They present Vasilkov as a rich gold miner. However, despite all their inventions about his wealth, Savva Gennadievich turns out to be too ordinary and boring a provincial, which leaves no impression on Lidiya.
Meanwhile, Nadezhda Antonovna faces serious financial problems. First, she turns to the elderly Prince Kuchumov, who also shows interest in Lydia, then to other possible suitors. When they all refuse to help, Nadezhda again turns her sights to Savva. Finally, Lydia, under pressure from her mother, agrees to marry Vasilkov, who is madly in love with her.
After their marriage, the Cheboksarovs continue to lead a luxurious lifestyle, gradually accumulating significant debts. Savva, experiencing horror, realizes that he will have to pay for everything. Realizing that for the sake of love he found himself in a difficult situation, Savva is forced to reveal his truth...
