The action takes place in the late fall of 1942. The Germans are rushing to the Volga. And in Stalingrad were fierce fighting for every house and every street. At this time in the Saratov military mortar-artillery school arrives a new addition.
Seventeen-year-old boys who have graduated from ten years of school will have to undergo special military training for ninety days. To become commanders of mortar units, batteries, divisions. Some of them will be more fortunate and survive the war. Some would die in the first days after arriving at the front. And some would die in the NKVD walls, never having waited for the commander's lozenges on their buttonholes.
Meanwhile, they are all cadets, which means they still have three whole months to find a friend, meet a girl and become a commander.
Newly made friends Rem Raysky and Petya Glushchenko are in love with sixteen-year-old Yana. According to all the laws of the genre, Yana should have chosen Rem, because he was handsome, witty and charming. In contrast to him is a modest and taciturn village boy.
But Yana chooses Petya, and like a true friend, Rem accepts this choice. No matter how hard it is, Rem helps the lovers in every possible way and even risks himself when Yana is in danger.
