Plot:
The action of the film On a Nameless Height takes place in 1944, in Western Belarus. The Red Army is preparing for an offensive, and the main blow will be delivered on the section of the front in front of Major Inozemtsev's regiment.
Inozemtsev sends reconnaissance groups every day behind enemy lines to probe the defenses in the offensive area, but each time the soldiers cannot capture a normal "language" Then you'll come across some old man from the Volkssturm militia, and if you manage to capture an officer, the sniper won't let you bring him to the regiment's location.
This sniper, a real pain for Inozemtsev, in addition to hunting "tongues", he also shot senior and high-ranking officers. The captured tongue from the Volkssturm said that according to rumors, in his unit there was an unusual sniper, a real ace, who specially arrived at this section of the front on the orders of the Wehrmacht high command.
Although the order for the offensive was signed at the corps headquarters, Inozemtsev doubts that the main attack should be carried out by his regiment. After all, the Germans could have guessed that the attack would be carried out here, so why are they keeping old Volkssturm militiamen in this area?

The major was also disturbed by the abundant mining of the area with anti-personnel mines. The Germans were probably preparing a trap: to lure significant Soviet forces to the militias and then strike from the flanks.

The scouts who returned from the mission reported information that further perplexed the command: only machine gun nests and pillboxes were real at the height, everything else was a sham.
At this time, sniper sergeant Olga Pozdneeva, who had arrived from the corps, destroys the German ace during a multi-day sniper duel, and Inozemtsev has one less headache.
But the major is tormented by the question: what to do with the heights? If he sends the entire regiment there, the German tanks, two hours away, will crush it. Having thought it over, Inozemtsev makes the right, but most difficult decision in his life.
Send a reconnaissance company to the heights, reinforced by penal troopers under the overall command of Lieutenant Malyutin. They would have to simulate the attack of the main forces, and by their actions draw the main forces of the Germans onto themselves. The major understood that he was sending his men to certain death, but he had no other choice…
