Narrative:

The film takes place in 1944. Young lieutenant Kravtsov, having graduated from military school, goes to the front, at the disposal of the commander of a rifle regiment. On the way, a wise driver tells Kravtsov about the sad statistics, from which it follows that in most cases a lieutenant lives at the front no more than three days.

Before Kravtsov could properly understand the full meaning of what he had heard, the car he was driving came under artillery fire, and everyone in it, including the wise driver, died. And miraculously surviving Lieutenant Kravtsov successfully reached the regiment headquarters, where he received command of the 2nd platoon, 2nd company in Captain Tkachenko's battalion.

The battalion was at the front line and engaged in fierce battles with the enemy. The platoon that Lieutenant Kravtsov took command of numbered seven fighters, and the company was slightly over thirty. In a few days, Tkachenko's battalion, badly battered in battle, was supposed to go to the rear to be reformed, but for now it was being thrown into senseless attacks on well-fortified German positions.

In one of these attacks, the company commander is seriously wounded and hands over command of the company to Lieutenant Kravtsov. At this time, out of more than thirty fighters, only seventeen remain in the company, but Kravtsov, carrying out the last order of the company commander, again raises the company to attack. At this time, a messenger from the battalion commander transmits an order to call off the offensive and saves Kravtsov's company from certain death.

This is how Lieutenant Kravtsov spent two days at the front, and the next day his regiment had to leave for reorganization, handing over its positions to another regiment.

This fresh regiment was supposed to immediately go on the offensive, but the enemy fire adjustment point located in the mill could nullify all the efforts of the attackers and lead to large losses in the regiment. The task of destroying the camouflaged fire adjustment point is given to Lieutenant Kravtsov, who has already had a good whiff of gunpowder, because he has already been at the front for three days, and for a lieutenant this is a long time...
