Plot:
The action of the film "Demoted" takes place in the winter of 1943. A young lieutenant of the Red Army, who has never smelled gunpowder, is arrested for cowardice and failure to follow orders. Three days after arriving at the front, the lieutenant receives a murderous order: to take a height under heavy enemy fire with his incomplete platoon.
The lieutenant knew that, according to the regulations, the infantry had to go on the offensive after artillery preparation. It was the artillery that had to suppress the enemy's fortified firing points, and not a castrated platoon of infantrymen who would fall as soon as they emerged from the trenches. But few people at the front followed the regulations, so the lieutenant was accused of cowardice, demoted and arrested.
An investigator from the investigative department, a junior lieutenant who was also young and had not smelled gunpowder, arrived from the division headquarters to pick up the arrested lieutenant. The investigator was supposed to escort the arrested man to the division headquarters, and the battalion commander gave him an elderly soldier to help him.

The situation at the front, as well as the front line itself, was changing rapidly and hourly, so when the escorts delivered the arrested man to the division headquarters, it turned out that he had already been redeployed to another location. Of the division headquarters personnel, only a female military doctor and several wounded soldiers and officers remained.
One of them recognized his former brigade commander Vladimir Nikolaevich in the elderly soldier. In 1941, the brigade commander led his brigade out of encirclement, but instead of gratitude for the people he saved, he was accused of cowardice and brought to trial by a military tribunal. A German air raid saved the brigade commander from execution, and he, having taken documents from one of the dead soldiers, found himself on the front lines…
Now, as the "senior" commander, the former brigade commander takes command of the combined group of fighters and commanders. First of all, he sends the lieutenant-investigator to the nearest village for a cart so that the wounded can be evacuated. However, the lieutenant runs into a detachment of Germans up to half a platoon strong a few kilometers from their deployment site.
Returning, the lieutenant informs the brigade commander about the Germans, and he, having assessed the situation, understands that their route will not pass by them, which means they will have to accept this unequal battle, and then let it not be a military one tribunal, and fate will decide which of them is destined to live in this world...
