Narrative:
1943. General Vlasov, former general of the Red Army and now commander of the ROA (Russian Liberation Army), which is fighting on the side of Germany, arrives at a Soviet prisoner-of-war camp. Vlasov agitates the prisoners to join the ROA to fight against Bolshevism, which has brought so much misery to Russia.
Vlasov convinces the fighters that they are already lost to the Bolsheviks, and upon their return from captivity, either execution or a long term in the camps awaits them as traitors to the motherland. Many former Red Army soldiers, some out of conviction, some out of a desire to preserve their lives, began to leave the ranks. But still most of the prisoners did not want to fight on the side of the Germans.
After the agitation, Vlasov called one of the prisoners, Major Pugachev, over to him. Vlasov offers Pugachev a cigarette and starts a diplomatic conversation with him. Vlasov offers Pugachev to join the ROA. If he, an officer, agrees, many soldiers will follow his example.
But Pugachev also diplomatically refuses. The German command decided to destroy all the prisoners who refused to join the ROA. At night, a detachment of German soldiers armed with flamethrowers began to burn barracks with Red Army prisoners. The Germans met the soldiers who tried to escape from the barracks with a barrage of machine-gun fire.

But Major Pugachev and several other prisoners managed to escape from the barracks and seize a German car. On this car the fugitives managed to leave the camp quickly. After some time Pugachev and his comrades managed to sneak across the front line and reach their own.
But, their own did not greet the former comrades very warmly. Pugachev's group was arrested by counterintelligence and subjected to interrogation with the use of physical measures. Pugachev was accused of collaborating with German intelligence, and many of those who escaped, unable to withstand the torture, confirmed this.
Only one Soldatov, a fighter with whom Pugachev had befriended in the camp, did not sign the protocol. Nevertheless, Pugachev and Soldatov, having received long prison sentences, are sent back to the camp, this time to their "native" Soviet camp.
In the camp, former captive fighters and officers were subjected to pressure not only by the camp administration, but also by criminals supported by the administration. The criminals could even kill a politician with impunity. The courageous officer Pugachev tried to resist the criminals and they threatened to kill him. Hard labor and meager rations gave no hope of survival in the camp, prisoners died like flies and their place was taken by others.

Pugachev realized that he could not get out of the camp alive and planned to escape. It was better to die than to live a miserable camp existence. Pugachev's plans were facilitated by the fact that in all correctional institutions it was decided to hold an amateur talent show among convicts. The camp chief appointed Pugachev to be in charge of the show.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, Pugachev selected former front-line officers for his "ensemble". After rehearsals, the conspirators discussed the details of the future escape. And with the onset of spring, Pugachev and a group of comrades made a daring escape, taking weapons, food and a car.
The fugitives' goal was to reach the nearest airfield, seize an airplane (among the fugitives was a former military pilot) and fly to the United States. The fugitives were chased and soon caught up with them. But the former front-line soldiers did not falter, and decided to take their last stand....
