Narrative:

Action of the film The last armored train takes place in 1941, in the first weeks of the war. The 63rd Rifle Corps is surrounded, and the only escape route is the bridge over the Drut River. But German saboteurs, dressed in Red Army uniforms, capture this strategic facility, finally slamming the lid of the "cauldron".

The corps commander, Major General Maltsev, now relies only on the armored train located at Olkhovka station, about which the Germans knew nothing. According to Maltsev's plan, armored train was supposed to suddenly come out to the bridge and unblock it.

At that time, a military train with mobilized troops, consisting mainly of former prisoners, was heading towards the Drut Bridge from the rear of the country. One of the prisoners was the former Red Army general, corps commander Mikhail Alekseevich Romanov. Romanov's noble origins let him down. During the Great Purge, he was arrested and sent to cut down trees in the taiga, where he received the nickname Lumberjack.

The Germans let the train pass, but put their agent, Lieutenant Colonel Dietrich Hermann, on it, who, under the guise of Senior Lieutenant Shevtsov, a communications officer at the district headquarters, was supposed to infiltrate Maltsev’s headquarters.

During a stop at one of the stations, the train was subjected to heavy artillery fire from the Germans. Many soldiers were killed. Under heavy fire, the Woodcutter managed to get the train out of the station, and only a few people survived. But suddenly, an armored train appeared like a ghost on the train's route, right ahead. The Woodcutter and his comrades realized that no matter who was on it, the Germans or ours, nothing good awaited them, so they jumped off the train and tried to hide in the forest.

But the Red Army soldiers detain the fugitives, take them to an armored train, and lock them up until the circumstances are clarified.

At this time, Hermann arrives at Maltsev's headquarters, supposedly with a message from the front headquarters. Here he learns about the upcoming capture of the bridge with the help of an armored train. In order for the operation to be successful, Maltsev decided to send his deputy, Colonel Giryavy, to the armored train. Having learned that Giryavy was going to the armored train, Hermann asks to go with him.

On the way, Hermann kills the driver and takes Girevoy prisoner. Under threat of death, the colonel agrees to work for the Germans. Together with Hermann, they arrive at the location of the armored train, and Girevoy, under the pretext of reading Stalin's order, orders all personnel to be removed from the armored train and lined up in front of it. When all personnel were gathered and lined up, the Germans shoot all the soldiers and commanders from an ambush.

But the Woodcutter and his comrades were not part of the train's personnel, they were forgotten, and this allowed the Woodcutter to steal the armored train right from under the Germans' noses. One of the German officers suggests simply calling in the air force and bombing the armored train, but the ambitious Hermann swears that he will capture the train and prove that one Wehrmacht officer is stronger than a regiment of Russians.
