Narrative:
The Last Stand. Part 1: The Witches' Party Card.
Spring 1945, Poland. The 5th company receives an order to force the Oder, to anchor on the other bank and create a bridgehead for the offensive. On the eve of the operation, the command takes in the party of all those who tomorrow will go into this terrible battle.
In addition, the first ten who cross the river command promises orders, a short vacation home and a bonus of three thousand rubles.
Under a barrage of enemy fire, the Red Army soldiers force the river, take up the defense, and repel the first enemy attacks. At this time, Private Vedimeev, nicknamed "Witch", is wounded. Waking up in the hospital, "Witch" immediately asks to be discharged and goes to his company, but on the way he learns that all his comrades died without holding the bridgehead.
Then Vedimeev goes to his commander and asks about the promised vacation and bonus, to which the commander replied that he received his bonus in the form of a party ticket. Vedimeev throws away the party card and after the war never told anyone that he had been accepted into the party....
The Last Stand. Part 2: Reconnaissance.
The life of an infantryman in war is short: he stands up, goes into the attack and gets a funeral. At the end of the war no one wants to die, neither young soldiers, nor those who have been through the whole war. Platoon, in which served Private Chokov, was ordered to conduct a reconnaissance battle. Before the battle Chokov instructs the young fighter Alexei how to survive in this almost perishing business.
Lately he had often resorted to such tricks: he did not hurry to jump out of the trench under the pretext of buttoning his overcoat, or winding up the shoelace, so suddenly unwound before the attack. And now Chokov is trying to teach the young fighter Alexei, a soldier's cunning. Although Alexei is new in the platoon, but Chokov befriended him on the basis of music, which he was drawn to with all his soul.
At the beginning, Alexei follows all of Chokov's instructions, and on his advice takes refuge in the first crater. But seeing that his commander is wounded, Alexei leaves his hiding place and rushes to help, at which time he is overtaken by an enemy bullet. And Chokov manages to survive not only in this battle, but in the war in general. But he is done with music forever and after the war he works as a builder...
