The action takes place in 1944. The Red Army is fighting to liberate the left-bank Ukraine. The fierce struggle is not only on the ground, but also in the air. At this time, the Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment receives another batch of young pilots who have graduated from military flight schools.
They all want to serve in the legendary 2nd Squadron, commanded by Hero of the Soviet Union Guards Captain Alexei Titarenko, nicknamed "Maestro".
Titarenko got this nickname for his love of music, which, according to the heroic squadron commander, was eternal. While the war was a temporary matter. Therefore, even during the war, Titarenko did not forget about music and organized a musical ensemble in his squadron.
So Titarenko selected pilots for the squadron not only based on their ability to fly an airplane, but also on their ability to play musical instruments. In the meantime, the young pilots were getting used to the regiment, learning the equipment, and making training flights.
It was obvious that the war was drawing to a close and the commanders were in no hurry to send young pilots who had just recently graduated from school into battle. So when the next alarm sounded, the squadron commander gave the order: "Don't take the greenhorns! Only old men are going into battle!"
However, war is war. And losses are a common thing for it, so very soon yesterday's "greenhorns" become "old men", and their place is taken by new recruits...
