Plot of the film The Story of a Real Man (1949 film):

Action of the film A Tale of a Real Man takes place in March 1942. Fighter pilot Senior Lieutenant Alexey Meresyev (P. Kadochnikov) was shot down in one of the battles and fell in the area of the black forest of the Demyansk ring. Having regained consciousness, the pilot tries to get to his feet, but immediately feels a sharp pain. Nevertheless, Alexey forces himself to get up and move towards the front line.

After a few days of travel, Meresyev was already crawling, as the pain in his legs prevented him from walking. On the fifteenth day of the journey, Alexey wrote in his diary: "My strength is running out, an unknown beast is chasing me." However, three days later, Meresyev meets boys from a detachment that was fighting as a partisan in these forests. The exhausted pilot was taken to the detachment, where he was immediately given first aid, but the detachment realized that Alexey needed an operation.

Soon the pilot is taken to the hospital. The doctor did not deceive Alexey that he had gangrene in both feet, and only their amputation could save Meresyev's life. Alexey is having a hard time losing his feet, because there, in the forest, he crawled for eighteen days and nights with one thought: to quickly sit at the controls of the plane to fight the enemy. And now he will probably be discharged.

The ward mates try to support Alexey. Someone tells about the writer Nikolay Ostrovsky, who was paralyzed but wrote good books. Someone recalled a manager he knew who managed to climb the career ladder without legs. But Alexey is very little touched by these stories. After all, he is neither a writer nor a manager, he is a fighter pilot, and a pilot without legs is the same as a bird without wings.

Then the regimental commissar Vorobyov asks the nurse to find an old magazine, which contained a note about a Russian pilot from the First World War, Lieutenant Karpovich. This lieutenant was wounded in one battle, and like Meresyev, his foot was amputated. However, the lieutenant did not give up, he worked on himself and made himself a prosthesis. Soon he returned to aviation and fought as before. Alexei objects: the lieutenant lost only one foot, and he lost two, besides, aviation was completely different then. But Vorobyov replies that Meresyev is not some kind of tsarist lieutenant, but a Soviet man! And a Soviet man can endure anything.

Soon Alexey began to master the prostheses. It was hard to learn again: first on crutches, then holding on to the wall. But this did not stop Meresyev, he persistently trained, and very soon he began not only to confidently walk on prostheses, but also to run and even dance. Alexey demonstrated his dancing skills at the military medical commission. The doctors were amazed and granted Meresyev's request to send him to fighter aviation.

In one of his first battles, Alexey immediately proved himself by shooting down two enemy planes.

In the same battle, his comrade-in-arms, Lieutenant Petrov, was seriously wounded. The young pilot is worried, because now he will probably be written off from aviation. Alexey tells his wounded comrade a legend about fishermen caught in a storm: some fishermen, frightened, threw themselves to the bottom of the boat and soon died, crashing into the coastal rocks, and those who did not chicken out and leaned on the oars with all their might, withstood the elements.

This story was told to Meresyev by a real person – Commissar Vorobyov. And now, remembering these words of Vorobyov, Alexey advises his wounded comrade not to despair, because he is a Soviet man, and a Soviet man will withstand any test…
