Narrative:

The action of the movie Don's tale takes place in the twenties of the last century. The squadron of ChON (special-purpose units) "Koshevoy's Hundred" conducts a mop-up operation against the so-called bandits (Cossacks who disagree with the Soviet power) in the Don steppes. Once the squadron managed to get on the trail of a "gang" led by its namesake, Ataman Koshevoy.

But this time the ataman and his men managed to get away. At the mill, the Red Army found only a young woman who complained that the bandits had raped her and asked the Red Army to take her with them.

The commander of the hundred decides to take a woman into the squad, because she too has suffered at the hands of bandits. For the first time he assigns Daria (that was the woman's name) to machine gunner Yakov Shibalok. From the commander's point of view, Shibalok was not "too fond of women".

The appearance in the squadron of a beautiful young woman is tantamount to a time bomb. The fighters began to lose their heads trying to please her, and Daria in turn put into action all her tricks that would seduce some fighter, or better, the squadron commander himself.

Soon the commissar advises the commander to get rid of the maiden, otherwise it will be increasingly difficult for them to restrain the basic instinct of the fighters starved during the war. Following the commander's instructions, Yakov Shibalok looked after Daria. He did not allow the soldiers to groom her and watched over Daria's moral character. But such intimacy with a beautiful Cossack could not leave indifferent even such a steadfast fighter as Shibalok and Yakov, expressing himself in the folk Cossack language, "knocked Daria up".

Nine months passed... One day the commander of the hundred decided to give his men a break, and the hundred stopped for a rest in one village. Besides, there was almost no ammunition left in the unit, and they had to wait for replenishment. Left alone, Daria informs Yakov that they are going to have a child and asks him to immediately flee with her from the detachment.

At that time the detachment was attacked by Koshevoy's "gang". The detachment managed to escape, but many fighters were killed, and the detachment commander was seriously wounded. Soon he died of his wounds. At that time Daria went into prenatal labor, and realizing that she could die, she confessed to Shibalok that it was she who informed the bandits that the squad had no ammunition. In addition, she stated that she was an agent of Ataman Koshevoy and had been specially infiltrated into the Red Army detachment to elicit the necessary information.

Yakov was ready to attack the spy-wife in rage, but suddenly he heard a child crying. Shibalok took the child, and came out of the forest to his comrades. He relays Daria's story to them, and the fighters demand immediate and severe reprisals against the enemy spy. But, the commissar advises to observe revolutionary legality: Daria must be brought to trial.

Shibalok realized that he was guilty in front of his comrades, because it was he who warmed this snake on his chest. And while the comrades were burying the dead commander, Shibalok goes into the forest and kills Daria himself. Before her death Daria asks Yakov only one thing: to take care of their child...
