Narrative:

Действие фильма «Сорок первый» происходит в Средней Азии во время civil war. A defeated Red Army detachment retreated from the Caspian Sea to the sands of Karakum. Only twenty-three fighters and Commissar Yevsyukov managed to escape the circle of death. Among the fighters was one girl, the shooter Maryutka Filatova, who had forty killed White Guards to her credit.

On the way, the detachment came across a White Guard caravan, and a battle ensued. Maryutka took aim at an officer hiding behind a camel, hoping that this would be her forty-first destroyed White Guard, but the officer unexpectedly raised a white flag and came out with his hands up.

As it turned out, it was Lieutenant Vadim Nikolaevich Govorukha-Otrok, authorized by Admiral Kolchak to represent him in the Transcaspian government of General Denikin. Since the captured lieutenant refused to talk to Yevsyukov, the commissar decided to deliver him to headquarters, and assigned Maryutka Filatova to guard the White Guard.

However, at night, another unpleasant surprise awaited the detachment: the Kazakh caravan driver escaped and stole all the camels. Left without food and water in the desert, the detachment of Red Army soldiers lost one soldier after another, and only a few of them managed to reach the coast of the Aral Sea.

Here Yevsyukov decides to split his detachment: send the captured lieutenant along with Maryutka and two fighters by sea to headquarters, and he himself with the remaining fighters goes along the coast to assemble a new detachment. But on the way, the boat with the captured lieutenant gets caught in a storm, the fighters escorting him die, and the surviving lieutenant and Maryutka end up washed up on a deserted island.

Having found refuge in a fisherman's hut, they temporarily forget what connected them in this life. When the lieutenant fell ill, Maryutka looked after him as if he were her own, and soon these two, who yesterday were ready to kill each other, realized that they were hopelessly in love. But the love idyll did not last long, the appearance of uninvited guests on the island forced the lovers to remember that there was a war going on, and in this war they were on different sides of the barricades...
