Narrative:

At the height of the civil war, an emergency occurs in one of the Cossack squadrons: the mare of Red Army soldier Trofim gives birth to a foal. The squadron commander orders Trofim to immediately get rid of the foal, because you never know, the commander will come to inspect the regiment, and he will be prancing in front of the front and wagging his tail: something is wrong, basically.

Trofim took the foal away from the village where they were staying, took aim, but was unable to shoot. And when he returned to the village, he reported to the squadron commander that the gun had jammed. But by this time the commander had changed his mind about the stallion and allowed Trofim to keep it.

True, in the very first battle, he regretted that he had made such a decision, because the foal was always underfoot and prevented the soldiers from fighting. The commander again calls Trofim and demands that he get rid of the foal, but he could no longer carry out the order, because the foal had disappeared somewhere: Trofim thought that it had probably died in battle.

But he did not die, but ended up in the camp of the White Guards, and the next day he arrived with them at the river, across which Trofim's squadron was crossing to the other bank. Taking the squadron by surprise, the White Guards opened heavy fire on those crossing. And under this fire, the little foal rushes into the river, chasing after his mother.
Troim, who had almost reached the middle of the river, saw that the foal had fallen into a whirlpool, and without a second's delay rushed to his aid. The White Guards also saw this and stopped firing, watching Trofim save the foal, but as soon as the Red Army soldier stepped onto the bank, he was struck down by a well-aimed shot from a White Guard officer...
