Remembering his life, Andrei Sokolov sometimes thought: was it all a dream? After all, so much grief and misfortune could not have befallen one person. But the fate of the man of that time was not much different from his own fate.

Revolution, civil war, famine, devastation. A native of the Voronezh province, Sokolov served in the Red Army from the first days of the war. In the hungry year of 1922, he went to Kuban, where he worked as a farm laborer for the kulaks. Only thanks to this did he survive the terrible post-war famine.

But now the hardships and deprivations seemed to be behind us. Sokolov returned to Voronezh, got a job as a driver, got married and began to live a normal human life. And when his first child was born, Sokolov was beside himself with happiness and expected only good things from life.

But it didn't last long. Trouble knocked on the door of his house again. But this time there was a war. The most terrible and bloody in the history of mankind.

This war took away from Sokolov all the people closest to him. He himself spent three years in German captivity, looking death in the eye every day. But fate spared him.

And so, having returned from the war, he realized that there was no point in living for him anymore. But one day he came across an orphan boy on the road, just as lonely in the whole wide world as he was…
