The film takes place in July 1942. Having lost a large number of soldiers in battle, a Soviet rifle regiment retreats to Stalingrad.
In the Don steppes, the regiment will have to delay the advance of the Germans until the main forces arrive and delay the crossing of the Don.
Under the scorching July sun, in the rocky steppe soil, the soldiers had to dig trenches and ditches with sapper shovels, which would protect them from the fire of the advancing enemy.
Soon the enemy, who had a multiple superiority in manpower and equipment, began an offensive. After the bombing of Soviet positions by aircraft, tanks were used.
The regiment successfully repelled the first attack, but it was followed by a second and a third. The Germans harassed the defenders with aircraft and tank gun fire. But the regiment held out, and with the arrival of the main forces, the German offensive was delayed.
Of the several hundred personnel of the regiment, only twenty-two remained. All the officers of the regiment were killed, and now the most senior in the unit was Sergeant Major Poprishchenko. Together with the rest of the units, the remains of the regiment are transported to the other bank of the Don to prepare a new defense.
While the soldiers were busy burying Lieutenant Goloshchekov, Sergeant Major Poprishchenko went to headquarters, located in a nearby village, to clarify their next steps.
