Action of the film Living dead разворачивается в июне 1941 года. Finally, after wandering through the woods, Sintsov ends up in a front-line newspaper, where he met at least one familiar face during these days. The editor of the front-line newspaper also did not know where the political administration of the third army was now, so he offers to stay with him in the newspaper, instead of the killed war correspondent Tolmachev.

At this time, another military correspondent, junior political instructor Lyusin, entered the office and reported that the Red Army units had badly battered the Germans beyond the Berezina River. Having heard at least one piece of good news in these days, Sintsov asked the editor to immediately send him there so that he could then write about these heroes.

But Sintsov was not destined to return to the editorial office of the front-line newspaper. He was wounded and ended up in a medical battalion.

Returning from the medical battalion a few days later, Sintsov meets his old friend, Izvestia war correspondent Mikhail Weinstein. Mikhail invites Sintsov to go with him, because he is going to see Corps Commander Serpilin: his battalion knocked out 39 German tanks in one day! (100th of all German tanks on the Eastern Front). Sintsov readily agrees to meet this heroic Corps Commander.

Serpilin wore general's epaulettes, but his rank was corps commander. Such ranks were worn by those who were put into service straight from the camp. Serpilin served four years of time on a false denunciation, and now, like many others, he will have to pay back in blood everything he was deprived of: rank, awards, and the trust of the party.

Having collected material about Serpilin's battalion, the war correspondents were supposed to go to their editorial offices, but Sintsov decides to stay. Serpilin warns that they could soon find themselves surrounded, and they could stay here forever. But Sintsov firmly decided to stay close to the courageous corps commander.

While leaving the encirclement, Sintsov was wounded, and the comrade with whom he was walking, realizing that he would not be able to carry Sintsov on himself, went for help. Before that, he took all the documents from the wounded man and took off his commissar's tunic. Soon Sintsov regained consciousness and went to look for his own. But his own did not receive Sintsov very warmly.

Without documents he was a nobody, and maybe even an enemy. The front rolled back almost to Moscow, but Sintsov managed to penetrate unnoticed into the capital. Here he came to the district committee of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks), where he had once been accepted into the party, and asked that they believe him and send him to the front at least as a private.

Fortunately, Sintsov is recognized by the district committee secretary, Alexei Malinin, who invites him to join his platoon of the people's militia. Soon, Sintsov finds himself in the thick of the battle for Moscow. Seeing Sintsov fighting, Malinin petitions his superiors to return all of Sintsov's ranks, but is refused.

Soon Major General Serpilin was appointed commander of the division where Sintsov served. His rank, awards and trust of the party were returned to him. Malinin suggests that Sintsov contact Serpilin so that he can confirm his biography. But Serpilin's example showed Sintsov that no patronage would help him, and only he himself, with his contribution to the victory, could restore the party's trust and former ranks...
