Narrative:
Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov, a former collegiate counselor, arrives in the provincial town of N. He was not handsome, but he was not bad-looking, he was not fat, but he was not thin, in general, an average man, and he had a brichka, which was usually used by landowners who had no more than a hundred souls of peasants. No one in the town of N noticed the arrival of this gentleman.
But as soon as Chichikov visited the governor-general, the police-master and other top officials of the city, the situation changed radically. Chichikov was courteous, courteous, educated and subservient, and this very much liked provincial socialites. Chichikov tells little about himself, not showing off his merits, only modestly mentions that he "endured in the service of the state for the truth", which further fascinates the local society.
Thanks to the fact that the governor introduced him into high society, Chichikov makes acquaintances with the local landowners, who he needed to carry out his cunning plan.
Once Chichikov served in the customs service, but for assisting smugglers got burned and lost all his hard-earned fortune. With the remaining ten thousand after the confiscation of property Chichikov could hide in some hole and modestly live and work, but ambitious Chichikov certainly wanted to get rich.
To fulfill this dream Chichikov devised a new scheme, more ingenious than simply take a fee at customs. Having learned that the guardianship council pays two hundred rubles per serf, Chichikov came up with a clever combination. He decides to buy up "dead souls", that is, those peasants who have actually died, but were not audited, and therefore were listed as alive.

For such "dead souls" landlords had to pay taxes, so Chichikov almost without much difficulty and large investments managed to buy them four hundred of these "dead souls". Naturally, both parties to the transaction had to keep silent, otherwise it could turn into not only a scandal, but also the court.
But the fact that Chichikov bought four hundred peasants does not go unnoticed in the city of N and Chichikov becomes the most popular man in the city. In his honor balls are arranged, he is in love with all the best ladies of society, he is a legend. But this is what ruined the combinator, they began to talk about him so much that soon Chichikov's mysterious personality began to arouse suspicion.
And then came the news that a new governor-general is arriving in the city, and the local officials, fearing a scandal in connection with Chichikov, begin to refuse to receive him.
At one point, the doors of all the city bosses for Chichikov closed, and he, realizing that this time his plan burned out in a hurry runs away ...
