Narrative:

The film takes place in the Ukrainian farmstead of Dikanka, in Poltava region. On the night before Christmas, the young blacksmith Vakula lost his peace of mind. The next day was a holiday, all the young people would have fun, but Vakula was in no mood for fun: he was hopelessly in love with Oksana, the daughter of the Cossack Chub, who had far from the best relationship with Vakula.

In addition, the narcissistic Oksana constantly teased Vakula, making him jealous and go crazy. That night, Vakula looked at his beloved's window for a long time, as she preened herself in front of the mirror, talking to herself. Finally, Vakula decided to go to Oksana and once again confess his love to her.

At this time, Oksana's girlfriends came to see her, and Oksana noticed new slippers on one of them. She could not contain her admiration, and Vakula, seeing this, promised to buy her the same slippers that noble ladies wore. In response to this, calling all her friends as witnesses, Oksana promises to marry Vakula only if he presents her with slippers that the queen herself wears.

The blacksmith became even more despondent from this almost impossible condition of his capricious beloved. Unable to fulfill this latest whim of Oksanka, Vakula goes to the ice hole in the river with the firm intention of drowning himself, but at the last moment decides that not all is lost.

In St. Petersburg, Vakula goes to the Zaporozhian Cossacks, who stopped in Dikanka for a rest in the fall.

But the blacksmith did not drown or hang himself, but returned from Petersburg alive and well, and at the moment when Oksana's father, the Cossack Chub, and his godfather decided to remember the newly departed Vakula, he himself appears, as if nothing had happened, in Chub's house.

Having made sure that Vakula is alive, Chub offers to forget their old grievances, and Vakula in return asks Chub for his daughter's hand. At that moment, Oksana enters the hut, and seeing Vakula alive, she beams with happiness. Unfolding his kerchief, Vakula shows her the very shoes that the queen herself wore, but Oksana did not even look at them, now she was ready to marry Vakula without any royal gifts...
