Plot:
The action of the cartoon takes place in the Ukrainian village of Dkanka on the night before Christmas, when young people go from house to house singing merry carols, praising Jesus Christ. That night, the rich Cossack Chub was going to his godfather's for a kutia, and his daughter Oksana had to stay home alone.
Oksana's fiancé, the blacksmith Vakula, who had a strained relationship with Chub, decided to take advantage of this. Vakula knew that Chub would go visiting, so he hurried to Oksana. But the devil, who hated the blacksmith because he depicted him in his painting in a very bad light, tries to prevent Vakula.
In order to hinder Vakula, the devil steals the moon from the sky, counting on Chub not wanting to go visiting on such a frosty, and also dark, night. But Chub has not changed his intention to go for a walk that night and thwarts the devil's plans regarding Vakula.
As soon as old Chub disappeared from sight, Vakula suddenly appeared in his house. At this time, Oksanka's friends came to carol, and she saw new beautiful slippers on one of them. Seeing Oksanka's admiration for the new slippers, Vakula promises to buy her the same slippers that the city young lady wears.

But this was not enough for the narcissistic beauty Oksana: in the presence of witnesses, she declares to Vakula that she will marry him if he presents her with the same slippers that the queen herself wears. Vakula was ready to hang himself or ask the devil himself for help from such an impossible request.
The devil heard Vakula's request and is ready to help him, but offers to make a mutually beneficial deal. Vakula pretended to be ready to cooperate with the devil and, taking advantage of the moment, catches him by the tail. Having gained an advantage over the devil, the blacksmith demands that he be immediately delivered to St. Petersburg, to the queen.
But having arrived in Petersburg, Vakula does not dare to go straight to the queen, but decides to go for help to his fellow countrymen, the Zaporozhian Cossacks. Fortunately, they were just getting ready to meet the queen, and the blacksmith persuades them to take him with them. Finding himself in the royal palace, Vakula falls at the queen's feet and tells her his story with the shoes.
And the queen, contrary to Vakula's fears, was not angry with him at all, on the contrary, she really liked such simplicity and she immediately ordered the servants to give the blacksmith the most expensive royal shoes. With this gift, Vakula saddled the devil and immediately rushed to Dikanka, because now he had every reason to ask Oksanka to marry him...
