Plot of the film Viy (1967):

Khoma Brut, a student at the Kyiv Theological Seminary, and his fellow students are going on a short-term vacation. On the way, the friends are caught in a thick fog, and they have already decided to spend the night in the steppe, but Khoma suggests looking for some housing to stop for the night.

Soon the seminarians find a small village and ask to spend the night in the first hut they come across. The owner of the hut, an old woman, agrees to take the seminarians in for the night, but on one condition: that they sleep in different places. As the most talkative and impudent Khoma got a place in the barn, next to the cattle and pigs. But as soon as Khoma settled down on the hay, the owner entered the barn and headed towards him.

At first, Khoma thought that the old woman wanted to have sex with him and tried to run away from her, but the grandmother suddenly saddled Khoma and rode out of the barn. Khoma obeyed, but when they rose into the air, he realized that the old woman was a witch. Khoma prayed, and the prayer made the witch land, but as soon as they touched the ground, Khoma pounced on the witch, beating her with a stick.

When the witch began to give up the ghost, Khoma noticed that she had turned into a beautiful girl. In horror, Khoma fled the scene straight to Kyiv, to the seminary. But a few days later, unknown people came for him and asked him to go with them and perform the funeral service for the deceased daughter of a wealthy centurion.

When Khoma saw the dead young lady, he was surprised to notice that this was the same girl that the witch had turned into. The centurion told Khoma that before her death, his daughter had asked him to perform the funeral service for her after her death, and the father, wishing to fulfill his daughter's dying request, promised to make Khoma rich.

After the first two nights of the funeral service, Khoma realized what kind of story he had gotten himself into. With the help of prayers, Khoma steadfastly defends himself for two nights against the deceased lady-witch who rose from the coffin, and after the second night of the funeral service, Khoma turns gray with fear. On the third day, Khoma resolutely refuses to continue the funeral service.

Но сотник обещает жестоко наказать Хому в случае отказа, и Хоме приходиться решиться на побег. Но сбежать от нечистой силы не так-то просто. Хому ловят и на третью ночь отпевания ему приходиться уже отбиваться от разных упырей, вурдалаков и, наконец, самого ужасного Вия…
