Действие фильма «Хроника пикирующего бомбардировщика» происходит в июле 1944 года. 17 июля Совинформбюро передало сообщение об освобождении войсками первого Белорусского фронта, под командованием генерала-армии Рокоссовского города Пинска, родного города командира четвертого экипажа бомбардировщика Pe-2 Mitky Chervonenko.

On this day there was a heavy fog over the front airfield of the bomber aviation regiment, so the pilots decided to celebrate the day of liberation of the hometown of their comrade in arms. The cheerful gunner-radiator senior sergeant Sobolevsky from the fifth crew of senior lieutenant Arkhiptsev, having shown ingenuity and resourcefulness, prepares a wonderful liqueur from apple syrup and liquid from the hydraulic system of the airplane.

But the celebrant and his crew did not have to taste the liquor. While his comrades were drinking to the liberation of his native town of Pinsk, Dmitry Chervonenko was fulfilling a combat task of the regiment command. He had to find and photograph an enemy airfield where Focke-Wolf fighters, called "Fockers" by the pilots, were based.

When the fun at the Soviet airfield was in full swing, mechanic Kuzmichev ran into the cockpit, looking anxious. He informed the pilots that Chervonenko was landing across the runway. The pilots realized what was going on and immediately ran out to the airfield.

It turned out that Chervoneko was killed and the plane was landed by his navigator, who reported that their plane was suddenly attacked by a group of Fokers while performing a combat mission. When the aerial survey data was processed, it turned out that Chervonenko's crew had photographed a false airfield.

This message puzzled the command of the regiment, which began to actively think about the location of the real German airfield. The fifth crew commander Arkhiptsev was also thinking about this puzzle. He suggested that the enemy's main airfield must be near the railroad station, where many trains with tanks had been seen earlier.

In addition, the main airfield is covered by several small carefully camouflaged ambush airfields. But the intelligence data diverge from the opinion of Arkhiptsev and suggest that the airfield in another place. Arkhiptsev and his crew are ordered to go out again to reconnaissance. At the place where Chervonenko was supposedly ambushed, Arkhiptsev's plane is suddenly attacked by "Fokers" that appeared from behind.

Having shot down one Focker, Arkhiptsev's bomber manages to evade pursuers and return to the airfield. Having returned to the airfield, Arkhiptsev reports to the command his thoughts about the enemy airfield and again prepare for the flight. Now Arkhiptsev had to fly in the vanguard of the regiment and having found the enemy airfield to give the main forces of the regiment its coordinates.

When approaching the supposed enemy airfield, Arkhiptsev is again attacked by several "Fokers" that took off from ambush airfields. Arkhiptsev can neither fight back, nor transmit a message to the regiment: his gunner-radio operator Sobolevsky is killed. Finally, he notices the enemy airfield and standing on it "Fokers". German fighters, having surrounded Arkhiptsev's plane, force it to land, but Arkhiptsev makes another decision - to ram the fighters standing on the ground ...
