Narrative:
The action of the movie Behind the matches takes place in the time of good old Finland on the farm of Liperi. When Anna-Lisa Ihalainen decides to have coffee, she is disappointed to find that there are no matches in the house. Waking up her negligent husband Antti Ihalainen, Anna-Lisa sends him to get matches from her nearest neighbors, the Hyvärinen's, who lived six versts away from the Ihalainen's house.
Antti, of course, could have shortened the distance and reached his neighbors on the river by boat, but like all normal heroes he decided to take a detour and on his head he met his friend Jussi Vatanen, a widower.
Jussi is anxious to find a new wife, and Antti, remembering that Ihalainen has a daughter, proposes to Vatanen to marry her. Jussi, in turn, asks Ihalainen to be his matchmaker, and the latter takes his friend's fate to heart so much that he willingly agrees.
When Antti arrives at the house of the Hyvärinen's, he informs them of Vatanen's wish to marry their daughter, and out of excitement forgets that he has come to the neighbors' house to buy matches. When he receives the Hüvärinen's consent, Antti hurries to tell his friend Jussi the news.
And when he heard her, he offered Antti to go with him to the town of Joki to buy presents for the bride and her parents. Here in Joki the friends find themselves in a cycle of merry adventures, thanks to which fate brings them together with their fellow countrywoman Kaisai Karhutar, with whom Jussi had an affair in his youth.

Learning that Kaisa is now widowed, Jussi instantly forgets about the Hyvärinen's daughter, and suggests that Kaisa marry him, while his friend Antti suggests that they go to the neighbors and come up with some explanation.
And Antti was so preoccupied with his friend's problems that he completely forgot about his own problems, because at the same time "terrible" rumors reach the farm that Antti went to America and drowned on the way.
Local tailor Tahvo Kenonen, who was not indifferent to Ihalainen's wife Anna-Lisa, and especially to her large household, upon learning of her husband's supposed death, immediately goes to her to propose.
Having waited neither for her husband nor matches, Anna-Lisa accepts Tahvo's proposal, because luckily he has matches with him, which means she will be able to drink a long-awaited cup of coffee....
