Plot of the TV series Marriage (1977 film):
Ilya Fomich Kochkareva (Oleg Borisov) decided to marry his friend, the inveterate bachelor Ivan Kuzmich Podkolesin (Alexei Petrenko). Despite the fact that Podkolesin occupied a fairly high position in the city: he was a court councilor, Ivan Kuzmich was timid and at a loss when dealing with women.
Finally, Kochkarev found a bride for Podkolesin in the person of the overripe merchant's daughter Agafya Tikhonovna Kuperdyagina (Svetlana Kryuchkova), whose hand was claimed by several other worthy suitors. Such a large choice put Kuperdyagina in an extremely difficult position; it was difficult for her to give preference to any candidate.
But Kochkarev comes to her aid, he convinces Kuperdyagina to make her choice in favor of his candidate, and to decisively refuse all the other suitors.
They decided to have the wedding immediately, and Podkolesin was in seventh heaven, constantly thanking Kochkarev for the service he had rendered him. However, the euphoria of the future marriage soon gave way to the fear of being bound by marital obligations for life, and, having weighed all the pros and cons, Podkolesin decided to give up on the marriage.
But the shyness of proposing to a woman had the opposite effect: Podkolesin did not dare to tell his bride about his decision, but simply ran away from his own wedding...
