Действие фильма «Формула любви» происходит 1870 году, когда в Россию прибывает знаменитый итальянский авантюрист граф Джузеппе Калиостро, он же «маг», «чародей» и «магистр тайных сил». Однако после нескольких сеансов «магии» и «чародейства», граф вынужден бежать из Санкт-Петербурга от погони, посланной всемогущим князем Потемкиным.
On his way, the Count visits one of his clients, a Russian landowner who is sick and whom he promises to "heal" with the power of his magic. After the first session of "healing" the landowner became a little "better", and he waited for further sessions, but suddenly the count said that he had to leave urgently, and suggests the landowner to send with him one of his relatives, that through him to maintain astral communication with the patient.
The young beautiful Maria Ivanovna, the daughter of a landowner agrees to go on a trip with him, only if the Count would put her father on his feet, but the Count had other goals for the girl. Cagliostro tries to derive a formula for love, the only feeling that he could not cause in people, and according to the Count's plan Masha should have fallen in love with him after two weeks.
At this time, a young landowner, Alexei Fedyashev, is tormented by unrequited love at his estate in Smolensk region. His problem was that his love was not for a living woman, but for an imaginary one, encased in a marble statue standing in their park.
Having learned that the great "magician" and "sorcerer" Count Cagliostro is staying at a hotel nearby, Fedyashev immediately goes to him and asks him to perform a miracle: to revive his favorite statue, "as the Greek gods once breathed life into the stone Galatea". At first the Count flatly refuses to help the young landowner, but when Masha asks him to do it, he is forced to agree.
The Count expected that with the help of his miracle of "revival" he will be able to fall in love with Masha, but Masha instead fell in love with Alexei, and Fedyashev, seeing Masha, realized that she was the girl he had dreamed of all his life....
