Действие фильма «Чужая родня» происходит в середине 50-х годов прошлого века в советской деревне. Повествование начинается со свадьбы передового бригадира из МТС Федора Гавриловича Соловейкова со Стешей Ряшкиной, после которой молодые по обоюдному согласию остаются жить в доме у родителей Стеши.

Having now started working at the collective farm, Fyodor now had the opportunity to take a closer look at his new relatives and realized that they were clearly strangers to him.

He was a foreman, a collective farmer, a Komsomol member, while his father-in-law and mother-in-law were inveterate small-proprietor individualists, and Stesha, who supported them, had left the Komsomol and quit her job several years ago. Soon, the son-in-law was being accused by his relatives of sitting on their necks and, to the detriment of the collective farm, not taking care of his personal farm, which, in the opinion of the Ryashkins, fed and watered him.

After such statements and reproaches, Fyodor insistently suggests that Stesha move away from her parents, but his wife, who clearly took the parents' side, refused him. Then Fyodor was forced to give an ultimatum: either Stesha leaves with him, or he himself leaves home.

Having not received a positive answer, Fyodor fulfills his promise, even though Stesha was expecting a child. And Stesha, left alone, was forced to rethink her attitude towards her parents, the Komsomol, the collective farm and everything that had developed between her and Fyodor...
