The film takes place in the fifties of the last century in the USSR.At this happy time, a young teacher of Russian literature, Tatyana Sergeevna, arrives on assignment to the workers' settlement to teach in school for working youth. Her former student, engineer Krushenkov, lived and worked in this village. Once Tatyana saw "light" in the young worker Krushenkov, and insisted that he study.
The truck driver Yura, who agreed to give Tatyana a ride from the train station, guessed that she was going to teach, since their school didn't have a teacher of Russian literature. Driving past a beer stand, Yura shows Tatyana Sergeyevna her future students, who were drinking beer after another day of work, and complains that it will be hard for her to work with them. After all, the previous teacher ran away two weeks after her arrival.
Suddenly the truck stopped, right in the middle of the road stood a man. Yura immediately recognized him as his friend, steelworker Alexander Savchenko, future student of Tatyana Sergeyevna. Sasha saw a pretty stranger in the truck cabin, and certainly wanted to meet the intelligent-looking girl.
Alexander jumped into the truck's cabin to invite Yura and his new acquaintance to a party to celebrate the overfulfillment of another plan by the open-hearth shop where he worked. Ironically, engineer Krushenkov worked with Savchenko and was also invited to the party, so Sasha was surprised in the evening to see Tatyana in the engineer's company.

Krushenkov asks his comrades to show the girl a room she could rent. Alexander immediately offers a free room at his fiancée Zina's mother's, in whose house the party was taking place. The future mother-in-law readily agrees, but Zina doesn't like it, she noticed how Sasha looked at the teacher.
Nevertheless, she had to agree, because her mother asked a lot of money for the room. On Tatyana Sergeyevna's first working day at school, Savchenko was late for class. He entered the classroom with flowers for the young teacher. Tatyana Sergeyevna does not pay attention to Alexander's pleasantries, because he has a fiancée, Zina. But Sasha lost his peace, the learned girl really hooked him. His friend Yura tells Sasha his opinion about why the teacher is so indifferent to him.
After all, she is a smart and educated girl, and he is a simple worker, smelling of smoke and sweat. Having drunk a glass of vodka for courage, Alexander goes to school. Having waited until the lesson is over, he bursts into the classroom and demands that Tatyana explain why she shies away from him like a leper.
Realizing that Savchenko is drunk, Tatyana Sergeyevna demands that he leave the classroom. Having failed to get an answer, Alexander leaves the school and never returns. Tatyana Sergeyevna is alarmed by Savchenko's absence, because she learns from engineer Krushenkov that Sasha is a smart guy.
He repeatedly submitted valuable rationalization proposals for improving production. Tatyana Sergeyevna goes to the plant where Savchenko worked. From afar, she watches how skillfully Alexander works, but he, seeing his favorite teacher, turns away from her, offended. Krushenkov sees how Sasha suffers and advises him to return to school. Alexander himself is no longer able to fight love, heeds the advice of his older comrade...
