Действие фильма «Родня» происходит в начале 80-х годов прошлого века. Мария Васильевна Коновалова приезжает из деревни в Москву, что бы навестить свою дочь Нину. В поезде она знакомиться с главным инженером рыбного завода Ляпиным, ехавшим в Москву в командировку.

This casual acquaintance of elderly single people had every reason to develop into something more substantial, but having learned that her own daughter was going through a personal drama, Maria Vasilievna decided to hold off on personal happiness.

Having barely crossed the threshold of her daughter's apartment, she learns that Nina has not lived with her legal husband Stanislav for a long time, but has been having casual relationships with some married Gena. Trying to help her daughter make peace with her husband, Maria Vasilievna makes the situation even worse and, having quarreled with her daughter, leaves home.

This situation makes her remember her life and her husband, whom she kicked out of the house, he once began to drink heavily. Now he lived in Moscow, was married to another woman and had two sons from her.

For some unknown reason, she suddenly wanted to find her ex-husband and see how he lived, but the picture that Maria Vasilievna saw greatly upset her. Her ex-husband drank, as before, lived in a miserable shack, and his wife and children had long ago abandoned him. Despite everything that had happened between them in their youth, the woman felt a sharp pity for this elderly and useless man and invited him to return with her to their homeland, to the village...
