Действие фильма «Не сошлись характерами» происходит в конце 80-х годов прошлого века. Сорокапятилетний Роман переживает кризис среднего возраста. Вроде все у него есть: и престижная работа и хорошая квартира и прекрасная дружная семья, вот только все это стало слишком обыденным. А душа требовала праздника, страсти и приключений.
Roman's wife Natalya Yurievna worked as a psychologist in the department of marriage and family, where she had to deal with the prevention of divorces and other family conflicts. But one day she was approached by a young woman who asked for help in starting a family. Her chosen one was much older and had a family, but he had not yet decided to leave, although he assured her that he no longer loved his wife.
This young woman persuades Natalia Yurievna to meet with the man and talk to him, to convince him to part with his wife, since their life together is no longer bearable. And although after-hours work, and even more so, visiting a client was not part of the psychologist's duties, Natalya Yurievna gives in to the young girl's requests and agrees to meet with the man.
When she arrives at the meeting, she sees that this man is her husband Roman. By the nature of her work Natalya Yurievna listened to her clients, but she did not give this opportunity to the man with whom she had lived for many years, but immediately went to court to file a divorce petition.
They didn't agree, such a dry formulation of the reason for divorce of two people who lived twenty years under the same roof. But the law is the same for everyone and the judge gives three months to think over the decision.
Meanwhile, Roman realizes that the new love, which at first so intoxicated him, has become so ordinary, and besides, different age, and different age is a different future. But most importantly, he was drawn to the house where he lived the happiest years of his life ...
