Plot:

The action of the film "Who Lives in Rus'..." takes place immediately after the end of the war. Ivan Bachurin, who went through the entire war, returns home, but an unpleasant surprise awaits him here. The state introduced a new tax on fruit trees, and now Bachurin, who had a nice garden, found it more profitable to cut down the trees than to pay any taxes on it.

However, despite the fact that Bachurin inherited the garden from his grandfather, he had no right to cut down trees in it, since by law all of this was now state property. Then Bachurin began pouring boiling water on the trees, which eventually led to the trees drying out.

For this, the people's court sentenced Bachurin to ten years in the camps, of which Ivan served almost eight years. After Stalin's death, an amnesty was declared, and Bachurin was released early.

However, after returning home, Ivan faced a completely different life. He quickly realized what it was like to be a former "convict" who was despised even by his own sons. His wife died shortly before his arrival and soon at one of the parties, Ivan met another woman, Vera, whose husband died at the front.

Trying to start a new life, Bachurin invites Vera to go with him somewhere where no one would know about his criminal record. In the meantime, Bachurin decides to leave for a few months to earn money, ordering Vera to wait.

However, upon returning home, Ivan learns that Vera did not wait for him and married a pilot. Unable to forgive her betrayal, Bachurin sets fire to his beloved's house, for which he receives his second term...
