Narrative:

The action of the movie Katala takes place in Russia, in 1989, during the late perestroika period. The protagonist of the movie, Alexei Grekov, nicknamed Grek, is a professional card player, in thieves' lingo "gurney". A few years ago in Moscow, the Greek gambled heavily and nearly lost his life. This circumstance forced him to give up cards.

Having given up the game, Grek took a job on a boat owned by his friend Shota, a catalan like Grek himself. Having a decent income from the boat by Soviet standards, Shota, unlike Grek, could not stop. Shota was going to Moscow, where there was to be a game with the Director himself, the biggest katala in the USSR. There was a big score at stake, and Shota planned to buy another boat with it.

However, this time luck turned away from Shota, and he lost everything he had, even more. After returning from Moscow, Shota meets Grek in an alleyway and asks him to look after his wife and daughter, who may be in danger, because Shota himself will have to lay low for a long time.

The Greek complied with Shota's request and went to his wife Anna, with whom he himself had long been in love. At the door of her apartment, the Greek met the Director's men, who came to extort the debt from her. And soon Shota himself was killed.

The Greek tries to convince Anna to give the money to the Director's men, but she swears that Shota has left her penniless. To help Anna, the Greek decides to return to the card business and goes to Moscow. Here he tries to organize a game with the Director through his acquaintances, but is refused. Nevertheless, he organizes games with various "suckers" from sunny Central Asian republics, who came to Moscow to scrape money.

Having earned a decent amount of money, the Greek stops playing cards again, and plans to pay off the director with them. But this was not enough for the Director, and soon his men again appeared at Anna's house. The Greek's former partner Karas came with a request to the Greek to convince Anna to voluntarily give the money to Shota. But the Greek did not listen to the request of his former friend and kills him.

Realizing that the Director's people will not leave him and Anna alone, Greek again goes to Moscow to organize a game with the Director. But this time he had no right to lose and a friend from the Research Institute provided him with special liquid lenses, with the help of which he could see through the cards.

With the help of these lenses, the Greek wins a large sum of money from the Director and asks him to leave Anna alone. But the Director's friends suspected the Greek of foul play, because he went to the toilet every two hours to change his lenses. Due to the fact that the Greek stayed in the lenses for more than two hours, his eyesight sharply deteriorated, in addition, the Director's men threw him out of the car at full speed.

To Anna the Greek returns as a half-blind cripple, and with great bitterness learns that all this time while he was risking his life, himself killed a man, Shota's money Anna hid in a secluded place. Having learned about such an essence of the beloved woman, the Greek leaves her and goes to his native place. Here he testifies against the Director about Shota's murder.
