Movie Nicknamed the Beast — классика советского боевика периода поздней перестройки и зарождающегося нового жанра в российском кино о героях Афганистана или Чечни бросивших вызов мафии. В конце 80-х и начале 90-х годов в Советском союзе развернулась настоящая видео лихорадка. Небольшие, расположенные иногда в подвалах в видеосалоны советские зрители предпочитали более комфортным кинотеатрам.
The most popular films of that time were of course about karate heroes Bruce Lee, Van Damme, Chuck Norris and other martial artists who defeated the powerful mafia single-handedly. Keeping up with the times, Soviet filmmakers made a number of films in the same style. One of these films was "Nicknamed the Beast", which has all the attributes of American action films: a war hero, mafia, love and an abundance of hand-to-hand combat scenes using martial arts techniques.
Narrative:
Действие фильма «По прозвищу Зверь» происходит в конце 80-х годов прошлого века в России. Молодой парень, Савелий Говорков, выполнив свой интернациональный долг в Афганистане, прибывает на Родину. За те два года, что Говорков отсутствовал, здесь много что поменялось. Пока Говорков вместе со своими товарищами защищал Афганскую революцию, в его родной стране произошла настоящая контрреволюция.
The new Russians, or, more simply, bourgeois and capitalists with a criminal past and present, have seized power in the country. Govorkov also ends up working for a certain Alik, one of these new Russian mafioso businessmen. Govorkov's comrade in the army, Varlamov, who was Alik's henchman, was given protection.
Govorkov's duties included ensuring the safety of Larisa, Alik's girlfriend, whom he was planning to marry. Before taking up his post, Govorkov received strong advice from Alik: not to encroach on someone else's property and not to think of falling in love. However, these instructions from the boss could not deter Govorkov, who was constantly forced to be near the young and beautiful girl. Larisa reciprocated Govorkov's feelings, and one day they decided to run away from Alik.

Having learned about this conspiracy and separatism, Alik, with the help of his people in the police, fabricates a case against Govorkov, accusing him of currency fraud and the murder of Varlamov, who is killed by Alik's people. On this false charge, Govorkov is sent to a penal colony for nine long years, and Larisa to a psychiatric hospital.
In the zone, thanks to his military and physical training, Govorkov received the nickname "Beast" and earned the respect of an authoritative thief in law in the colony nicknamed "King", who did not allow the prisoners to deal with him. But soon "King" was released from the colony and clouds gathered over Govorkov again. He receives information that people arrived at the stage who were only there to kill him.
During yet another assassination attempt, Govorkov escapes from the camp. Two prisoners who were supposed to eliminate him also escape with him. One of them dies, and Govorkov is forced to carry the seriously wounded second one. Before his death, the wounded prisoner tells Govorkov that he was ordered by a powerful mafioso nicknamed "Korean", for whom Alik was running errands.
Arriving in Moscow, "The Beast" exposes the leaders of the criminal syndicate and frees Larisa from the psychiatric clinic where Alik had locked her up...
