The action of the movie takes place in the mid-1980s. Pavel Sergeyevich Shorokhov, the former director of one of the largest grocery stores in Moscow, is released from prison, where he spent four years for trading in unaccounted goods. On his way home, Shorokhov goes to Turkmenistan, where he works as a snake handler for almost a year to earn a little money and come to the capital not with empty pockets.

Arriving in Moscow, Shorokhov learns that his wife has left him for someone else, so he stays with his old acquaintance Peter Kotov, a responsible salesman who is bedridden with a serious illness.

Shorokhov realizes that having a criminal record under such an article, he can only dream of former heights in the sphere of trade, but he was also not tempted to work as a janitor or a laborer on a meager salary.

Shorokhov has not been forgotten in Moscow, and one of his friends, Boris Dmitrievich, the same director of a grocery store, offers him a "warm" place at a seasonal fruit stand. But soon after starting work, Shorokhov realizes that he can no longer engage in theft.
