The film takes place in Moscow in the mid-80s of the last century. Valentin and Valentina, students at one of Moscow's universities, are in love with each other, but their happiness is hindered by the difference in social status. Valentina was from an intelligent Moscow family, and her lover lived with his mother, a train conductor, and two sisters in a communal apartment.

Valentina and her older sister Zhenya were raised by their mother in the aristocratic spirit of developed socialism, hoping that they would marry wealthy and worthy men in the future. For this purpose, Valentina's mother even sacrificed her personal life: after her divorce from her husband, she remained alone. But the result clearly did not justify the investment: Zhenya was divorced, and Valentina, in her mother's opinion, was dating a young man who was clearly unworthy of her.

Valentina's mother considered her daughter's love to be just a light infatuation and asked her to pull herself together. Her older sister Zhenya was of the same opinion and, on her mother's advice, she took Valentina into "processing". Valentina tried to listen to the practical arguments of her mother and sister and heed the voice of "reason", but this time her feelings prevailed...
