Plot:
The film "The Defendant" takes place in the late 1970s. In the dock is Anton Filimonovich Skulov, a former front-line soldier who shot a young man with a hunting rifle. Skulov behaved with dignity at the trial: he did not justify himself and did not ask for mercy.
He fully admitted his guilt and when the court gave the final word, the defendant Skulov asked for the highest measure of punishment for himself - execution. But the court was in no hurry with a guilty verdict, because even despite Skulov's confession, there was much that was unclear in this case.
The defendant's defense insisted that he used the weapon in self-defense and only after a warning shot was fired into the air when a young man armed with a piece of pipe almost attacked the veteran in his own yard.
A group of tipsy teenagers, passing by Skulov's yard, set their sights on the luxurious flowers that the veteran grew for the graves of his fallen comrades, and one of the teenagers decided to "dispossess" the war invalid a little. Despite Skulov's protests, the young man rather unceremoniously pushed him away, and when the veteran tried to stop him, he attacked him with a piece of pipe.
Despite the fact that Skulov was a war veteran and disabled person, the local community sided with the dead guy, believing that he had fallen victim to a lone kulak who speculated in flowers.
However, the court, having heard the arguments of the defense and the prosecution, was not inclined to give in to people's emotions, but to be guided only by the facts. Therefore, after careful deliberation, the court could not come to a guilty verdict for Skulov, but sent the case back for further investigation...
