Narrative:

The action of the movie Flight 222. takes place in the late 70s of the last century. The Soviet boxer Gennady Shuvalov has asked for political asylum during the World Championships in the USA, so the Soviet embassy staff decides to evacuate his wife Irina Panina, a figure skater, who was also on tour in the USA at the time, to avoid provocations.

Panina was given a ride directly to the plane a few minutes before departure, but when she was already in her seat, U.S. immigration officials suddenly came into the cabin. They demanded that the Soviet embassy officials allow Panina to decide whether she wanted to return to the Union or whether she preferred to stay with her husband in the United States.

Panina stated that she wanted to return home to the USSR, but the emigration officers were not satisfied with this statement. They felt that Panina was unable to feel free enough to have a frank conversation on board the Soviet airplane, so they suggested that the conversation be moved to the office of the emigration service at the airport.

However, this was strongly opposed by the Soviet representatives, rightly believing that leaving Panin's plane could be the victim of provocation.

In response, the Americans banned the departure of flight 222 New York - Moscow, and long and fruitless negotiations began, with dozens of passengers of flight 222 becoming hostages. But despite the fact that the passengers had to sit in the airplane for several days, they steadfastly endured all the hardships and deprivations of their situation and were ready to defend the choice of their compatriot in case the Americans decided to use force.

Finally, the parties managed to find a compromise and agreed to hold the conversation in a van parked in front of the airplane. Irina, as she had done the first time, voiced her decision to return to her homeland, but suddenly the Americans, without consulting the Soviet side, offered Irina to meet with her husband....
