Narrative:

Действие фильма «Шофер на один рейс» происходит в начале 80-х годов, в СССР. Руководитель передовой животноводческой бригады из солнечного крымского поселка Гурзуф Софья Макаровна приезжает в Москву для получения премии за высокие показатели в работе.

Returning late at night from recording a TV show, Sofya Makarovna asks the driver of a watering tractor to give her a lift home. The driver, Mikhail Antonovich Artyukhin, agrees, not without grumbling; he is not supposed to take passengers. On the way, they meet, and Sofya Makarovna tells Artyukhin that she is going to buy a car for her daughter, who recently got married, with the bonus she received.

Mikhail Antonovich advises buying a Volga GAZ-21 station wagon, such a car will not wear out. Sofia asks Mikhail to help her buy a car, because she knows nothing about cars. Artyukhin willingly agrees to help the lonely woman, who divorced her husband four years ago.

Artyukhin himself was lonely, his wife had died several years ago and he lived with his son, a student at the composition department. The newlyweds were very happy with the gift from their mother, but it turned out that none of them knew how to drive. Sofya Makarovna, her daughter Lilia and son-in-law Alexander asked Artyukhin to become their driver. At the same time, to visit Crimea for a few days, they have not a house in Gurzuf, but a mansion. Artyukhin agrees, because he will soon have a vacation. In addition, he invites his son to go with them.

But Pyotr has a personal drama. His girlfriend Valya announced that she was marrying another, also a budding composer. Therefore, Pyotr decided to go to Crimea separately, hitchhiking. On the way, he meets an elderly Russian emigrant, Elizaveta Maksimovna, traveling in an old Volkswagen. Pyotr suggests that Elizaveta Maksimovna play the role of French millionaires traveling through Russia.

Ironically, the first to be played in this way were Sofya Makarovna and her children, who had also stopped for a rest while Artyukhin Sr. was sleeping in the car. When the father woke up, he of course recognized his son, but did not give him away. He simply took him aside and scolded him for getting into trouble with this French lady and the game of millionaires.

But Petr assures his father that everything will be fine and both groups continue moving. Lilya notices that Artyukhin and her mother are getting closer and closer and worries that Artyukhin might steal her mother and the car with her, since her mother registered the car in her name. Therefore, Lilya secretly calls her father to come urgently and drive the car away.

Seeing her ex-husband, Sofia Makarovna refuses to continue driving, he takes his things and announces that he and Artyukhin will go by bus. But Sofia Makarovna's ex-husband turned out to be a real racer, and in order to stop him and calm him down, the traffic police used a helicopter. The failed Schumacher's license was taken away, and Artyukhin, a driver for one trip, gets behind the wheel again...
