Action of the film In love by choicetakes place in the early 80s of the last century in Russia. The main character of the film, Igor Bragin, is a former famous cyclist. Having won the qualifying tournament, Bragin hoped to get to the European Championship, but instead of him, another went with "shaggy» with a paw.

Unable to bear such injustice, Igor quits sports and goes to work at a factory as a sharpener. Previously, Igor had everything that a simple Soviet person could dream of: trips abroad, a beautiful wife, a car, imported equipment. In an instant, all this was lost, and now Bragin had a hard and boring job at a factory from paycheck to paycheck, an empty apartment and trips not to Amsterdam for competitions, but to the village of Pupyrishki to pick potatoes.

Igor was unable to bear such a change, so he drowned his sorrows in alcohol. One day, in a senseless state, he was carried out of a subway train and sat on a bench next to the librarian Vera. Vera did not abandon her new acquaintance to his fate, but sent him home in a taxi, paying the driver for him.

The next day, Bragin and his friend are determined to get over their hangover, but they have no money for it. Igor tries to borrow a few rubles from his colleagues at work until payday, but as luck would have it, no one wanted to understand his plight. Having called all their friends, Igor and his drinking buddy Nikolai became completely despondent.

Having rummaged through his empty pockets, Bragin fishes out a piece of paper with the name Vera and a phone number written on it. But Igor couldn't remember who this Vera was, no matter how hard he strained his memory. Nikolai suggests calling this Vera, whoever she is, what if it works?

The drinking buddies were again soaring in spirit, because hope dies last. The drinking buddies called Vera and asked her to urgently help, because Igor had "fallen ill" and there was no money for "medicines". The compassionate and sympathetic Vera immediately arrived and brought money, which, after her departure, the friends used to buy half a liter of "medicines". Realizing that Vera was a simpleton, Igor began to speculate on her kindness.

Having learned where Vera lives, Bragin comes to her home, but Vera, realizing that she can't brush Bragin off now, is forced to refuse him. Then Igor asks Vera to help him get out of this deep life hole he was in.

Vera tries to explain to Bragin that a person can get everything, if only he really wants it. But Igor is skeptical about this theory, because how would he want to? After all, he would never fall in love with such an unattractive girl as Vera.

Then Vera suggests conducting an experiment and proving that Igor can love her. Igor agrees, but at first he considers it absurd, because he has nothing to cling to: no face, no figure, no feminine charm. In addition, Vera was a well-read bore, a quality that repelled Bragin most in women.

Vera, who has taken up Bragin's re-education, demands that he acquire some sort of hobby, and Igor, in turn, asks Vera to reconsider her attitude toward her appearance. On Vera's initiative, she and Igor spent weekends searching for the grave of a soldier who died during the war.

So they changed without noticing it: Igor stopped drinking, and Vera changed her hairdo, dressed up and lost weight. But this was not what the changed Igor needed now: one day he looked at Vera and saw something he had not noticed before – her eyes, and he realized that he was in love…
