Действие фильма «Размах крыльев» происходит в начале 80-х годов. Пассажирский борт ИЛ-18 сообщением Хабаровск-Иркутск-Свердловск терпит бедствие: поочередно в третьем и четвертом двигателе самолета возникает пожар. Экипаж бота отключает эти два вышедших из строя двигателя, но каждый из членов команды понимает, что теперь вся нагрузка ляжет на два других двигателя, а значит, вскоре они могут не выдержать и пожар возникнет и там.
