Narrative:
Action of the film Courier takes place during the perestroika period, in the USSR. The film's narrative begins with the scene of the divorce of the film's protagonist's parents, seventeen-year-old Ivan Miroshnikov. The father has found himself a young and beautiful woman, and the mother, unable to tolerate her husband's constant infidelity, initiates a divorce.
For some time Ivan still visited his father and his young wife Natasha, but soon his father, a civil engineer by profession, went to work in Africa. Ivan tried to enter a pedagogical institute, but without success.
Not having a calling for teaching, he simply fails the exam and tries to get a job to while away the time before the army. His mother finds him a job as a courier for the magazine "Questions of Knowledge". On his very first working day, Ivan receives an assignment to urgently deliver a manuscript to Professor Kuznetsov, but on the way to the professor he meets his bosom buddy Bazin.

He suggests celebrating the first working day by skating, and the professor waited in vain for his manuscript, Ivan accepts Bazin's proposals. Finally, having skated to his heart's content, the newly-minted courier hurries to the professor's house. Kuznetsov greeted Ivan rather unfriendly, since he was "only" three hours late, and having received the document, he tries to escort the careless courier.
But Ivan is in no hurry, he really liked the professor's daughter Katya, his age - a student of the prestigious philological faculty of Moscow State University. Having gathered his impudence, Ivan asks to treat him to tea and a sandwich, to which the professor reluctantly, but nevertheless, agrees. The next day Ivan again takes the documents to the professor and Kuznetsov's wife, who has already heard about him, invites the guy into the house.
This time the courier's witty remarks seriously angered the professor and he throws him out the door. But Katya really liked Ivan, who was so different from her "correct" classmates, representatives of the golden youth, and a friendship develops between them. But soon they realize how little they have in common.
Other soviet comedies
Katya, who was brought up in a prosperous Soviet family, does not like Ivan's cheerful but simple-minded friends, and Ivan, in turn, does not like the boring and arrogant "rich kids" - representatives of the golden Soviet youth. In addition, Katya's father, a professor, was very unhappy with the fact that his daughter was being courted by some courier who, moreover, did not have clear life principles.
Having called Ivan for a talk, Kuznetsov demands that he leave Katya alone, but Ivan, without blinking an eye, tells Kuznetsov that Katya is pregnant by him and asks for his blessing for the marriage. The professor, who took this latest joke at face value, immediately changed his attitude towards his future "son-in-law", but it was too late.
This joke really upset Katya, who lacked the intelligence and spiritual strength to understand Ivan, and therefore she became very disappointed in him.
And Ivan himself is disappointed in this beautiful, but essentially boring and dull girl. At the end of the film, Ivan is standing on a sports ground where guys are break dancing, and a demobilized soldier passes by, looking intently at Ivan. Ivan also looks at the soldier, and sees in him his closest prospect...
