The captain of the Pilgrim (a small fishing schooner) Ghoul, received an order from his shipowner Mr. Weldon to deliver his wife Mrs. Weldon with her son Jack and cousin Benedict to America. Captain Ghoul is preparing the ship for departure, but at the most inopportune moment his ship's cook Mag disappeared.
Having learned that the captain was looking for a cook, a certain Negoro offered him his services. The captain had no time to think, and he took Negoro on as a ship's cook. Just before the Pilgrim sailed, two policemen arrived at the pier, they were looking for a dangerous criminal who had escaped from hard labor. But Captain Gul, rashly told the policemen that there were no strangers on his ship.
After a few days of sailing, the Pilgrim encounters a shipwreck on its course. The captain sends several sailors to check if there are any survivors on board.
Soon the sailors returned, they managed to save three black slaves, whom the slave traders were taking to America. One of the sailors took an object similar to a wooden stick from the sinking ship as a trophy and gave it to Negoro to light the stove.
But in this object Negoro found an elephant tusk. Having learned that the sinking ship was filled with valuable ivory, the crew of the "Pilgrim" under the leadership of the captain set out again to the ship.
Only the guests, three rescued slaves and a cabin boy, fifteen-year-old Dick Send, remained on the ship. The captain took Negoro with him, whom he had been suspicious of after the boatswain saw the former cook Maga's watch on him.

But Negoro did not go down to the ship, but stayed with the boatswain in the boat. Seizing the moment, he pounced on the boatswain and strangled him with a scarf, then hacked a hole with an axe. And the ship, which was lying bottom up, having received an additional hole, began to sink rapidly.
Having lost the captain and the crew, Miss Weldon asks Negoro to take command of the ship. But Negoro is not satisfied with the captain's salary, he demands to pay him one hundred thousand dollars.
Iku Sendu and three rescued slaves manage to capture the arrogant Negoro and put him in the hold. Dick, as the most experienced on the ship, takes charge of the ship and sets course for South America.
But even without a cook they had a hard time, and Miss Weldon asked to let Negoro out, hoping that he had learned his lesson. However, Negoro had no intention of backing down from his plan. Unnoticed, he put an axe under the compass and the Pilgrim changed course, almost crashing on the rocky shores of Africa. Negoro himself left the ship in a boat.
The travelers managed to escape, but soon they fell into the clutches of Negoro's friends. Negoro demands that Miss Weldon write a letter to her husband asking him to save them.
Soon Mr. Weldon approached the shores of Africa on his yacht. Negoro, under the guise of a certain Don Miguel, went to him and agreed to become an intermediary between Weldon and the bandits.
But the captives managed to escape from the clutches of the kidnappers. While Negoro was trying to leave the yacht with a suitcase full of money, his captives were approaching the yacht in a pirogue.
Without thinking, Negoro hits Weldon and kills one of the two sailors who remained on the yacht. But he was unable to escape. As soon as Dick was on the yacht, he turned the vessel around in pursuit of the escaped convict...
