Plot of the film In Search of Captain Grant:

The film has two storylines. The first one tells about the life and work of the famous French writer Jules Verne. The young but ambitious writer Jules Verne, already known throughout the world for his artistic and educational novels, plans to write a total of one hundred novels. So far, he has written only fourteen, and is planning to write a fifteenth.

Jules Verne has already come up with a title for it: "The Children of Captain Grant". The author intends for the new novel to be not only entertaining but also educational. Jules, no longer able to keep his idea a secret, tells his friend, publisher and critic of all his books, about the future novel...

So, the noble Scottish lord Edward Glenervan, in the company of his young wife Lady Helen and cousin Major MacNabbs, travels by sea near Britain on the pleasure yacht "Duncan". One day, my lord organizes a shark hunt for his sailors.

Imagine the general surprise when a bottle was pulled out of the ripped belly of one of the sharks. Inside the bottle were four letters written in English, French, Spanish and German. The paper of the letters was pretty damaged by water.

But, having put together the fragments of phrases, the following text was obtained from all four letters: “In 1862, the three-masted ship “Britannia” was wrecked near the shores of Patagonia at the 37th parallel. I and two sailors managed to escape, but we fell into the hands of cruel natives. Captain Harry Grant”

Lord Glenervan urgently turned the ship to the shore, he decided to help Captain Grant. Upon arrival at the port, he sent a letter to Captain Grant's children: Mary and Robert. And he himself went to the Royal Admiralty to obtain an expedition to rescue the British sailors.

But the Admiralty refused, reasonably judging that many more people would die in saving three. Having heard the answer of the head of the Admiralty from the lips of the lord, Mary and Tom were very upset. And Lady Glenervan, who took the grief of the children to heart, asks her husband to go and search for Captain Grant himself.

After all, they had a powerful and first-class ship, a courageous and experienced captain, John Mangles. In addition, Edward promised his wife a honeymoon. And so the Duncan set out to sea again and this time headed for the shores of South America.

One day, a certain Jacques Paganel, a member of the French Geographical Society, appeared on the ship. Paganel was supposed to go to India, but due to his terrible confusion, he boarded the wrong ship. At first, Paganel was very upset by the mistake, but upon learning of such a noble goal of the journey, he happily agreed to take part in it.

The friends had a hard time, they crossed first South America, then Australia and New Zealand along the 37th parallel. But they failed to find Captain Grant in South America, Australia or New Zealand. In this search, the travelers lost several people, and almost all of them died.

But one day, sailing past the uninhabited island of Timor, which was also on the 37th parallel, the exhausted travelers saw a fire on the shore...
