The Southern command decides to send messengers to their camp in a hot air balloon with a demand for help for the besieged Richmond. But the Southern messengers do not have time to use the balloon; it is captured by a group of Northern prisoners who have decided on a daring escape from captivity.

The escapees successfully take off, but a storm wind blows the balloon far out to sea and after a few days of flight, the former captives land on an uninhabited island. One of the escapees, a former sailor, easily determined that their current location is an island in the Pacific Ocean, located at the 37th parallel, located not only at a considerable distance from America, but also from the main sea routes.

But this news did not make the fighters for black freedom lose heart. They decided to build a city on the island, which they named in honor of their leader Abraham Lincoln.

From the first days of their stay on the island, the fugitives noticed that someone invisible was helping them. First, someone carried Cyrus Smith, who fell into the sea during the landing of the airship, to the cave. Then the fugitives found barrels and boxes on the shore, which contained guns, gunpowder and other potions.

And one day a ship approached the island. At first the fugitives were happy to see it, but then it turned out that there were dangerous sea criminals on the ship - pirates. The fugitives were forced to engage in battle with the enemy's much superior forces, who from the first minutes of their stay on the island set the goal of destroying them.

And at the moment when a mortal threat hung over the fugitives, the pirate frigate suddenly exploded. The cause of the explosion was a shell fired from an unknown submarine, a fragment of which the fugitives found at the site of the explosion.

The fugitives decide to thoroughly explore this mysterious island once again in order to find their equally mysterious benefactor. And in one of the caves they discover the very submarine "Nautilus", which they have heard so much about from the books of Professor Aronnax...
