Narrative:
The film is set in the mid-1930s. The main character of the film, military fighter pilot Valery Chkalov, is dismissed from the army for systematic violations of military discipline. No, Chkalov was not a bad pilot, he was an excellent pilot and even the best pilot, but he was not a military pilot.
The army is based on the strict observance of regulations and orders of commanders, but Chkalov was a free artist in the sky. He improvised and recklessly drove, squeezed the maximum possible out of the machine, and took risks that were unjustified in peacetime, bringing his commanders to heart attacks.
Loops, turns, flights at extremely low altitudes - these are the reasons why Chkalov regularly ended up in the guardhouse after his next flights, and the flight under the bridge put an end to the patience of his commander Aleshin, who was forced to fire his best pilot.
But the restless soul of Valery Chkalov found its true calling. On the recommendation of his former commander Aleshin, he became a test pilot at the Menzhinsky Aviation Plant. Here Chkalov tested the new high-speed fighter designed by Mukhin.

At first, the tests are not very successful and the plant management is even going to close Mukhin's project, but Chkalov stubbornly insists on continuing the tests, proving that Mukhin's fighter is an excellent aircraft.
Chkalov achieves his goal, the tests were continued, and at the air parade Chkalov confidently defeated his student Georgy Baidukov in a training battle. However, during landing, one of Chkalov's plane's landing gear jammed and Valery lifts the plane into the sky again.
After several unsuccessful attempts to land the plane observing the parade, Stalin gives Chkalov the order to abandon the faulty plane by jumping out of it with a parachute. But Chkalov would not be Chkalov if he did not land the plane, despite the orders.
Stalin appreciated Chkalov's tenacity and courage, but also scolded him in a fatherly way for taking excessive and unjustified risks. According to the leader, one can and should risk one's life, but only if one sees a great goal before oneself.
Valery Chkalov understood well what Stalin had said and promised him not to take risks over trifles, because a legendary and heroic flight across the North Pole awaited him ahead…
