The film takes place in the winter of 1940 during Soviet-Finnish WarAfter two days of continuous assault on Height 062, which blocked the division's advance, the soldiers and commanders of the artillery battery received a long-awaited rest and finally got a good night's sleep.

But the sleep of fighter Boykov on this first night after the assault was disturbed by the platoon commander. Boykov and two of his comrades, Karpenko and Balandino, are to go on reconnaissance to check where the telephone cable, torn and abandoned by the enemy during the retreat, leads, and at the same time to clarify what enemy forces are in this area.

The cable leads the scouts to the Bezymyanny farm, in one of the houses of which they also found an enemy telephone. Since there was no enemy on the farm or near it, the scouts, having completed the task, were going to return to the unit, but suddenly enemy soldiers appeared from the forest.
