Plot of the film Young Guard (1948):
The film takes place in August 1942. The Germans are pushing south towards Stalingrad and the Caucasian oil, pushing back the Red Army.
The Germans are soon to enter the small mining town of Krasnodon in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine, and the authorities are preparing to evacuate the population.
First of all, the district party committee evacuates responsible party workers; future communists and Komsomol members are also ordered to leave Krasnodon.
The party sends many communists underground to organize sabotage and subversive work behind enemy lines. Communist Protsenko is appointed head of the Lugansk underground.
Some Komsomol members voluntarily remain in the city to join the ranks of the underground and fight the enemy.
Thus, having learned that comrade Protsenko had been appointed leader of the local underground, Komsomol member Lyuba Shevtsova approached him with a request to take her into the ranks of the underground.
Protsenko warns Lyuba that this is a very difficult matter, because she will have to pretend to be a person loyal to the new order.

And it is hard to do this when hatred towards enemies rages inside. In addition, you have to endure the contempt of the local population every day.
However, the Germans entered the city very quickly and cut off the evacuation routes for the Krasnodon residents, so many Komsomol members had to return home.
Oleg Koshevoy also returned home, and now learned that he and his mother would have to live in a barn, while a German general and his retinue of lackeys were staying in their house.
A noble rage boiled up in Oleg's soul when he saw that the Germans were in charge not only of his home, but also of his hometown. But the overwhelming majority of Komsomol members were in the same mood, so at night the guys would gather and discuss how they should live on.
Soon they created an underground youth organization called "Young Guard". Its commander was Red Army lieutenant Ivan Turkenich, and its commissar was Oleg Koshevoy. Lyuba Shevtsova, who maintained contact with the Lugansk underground, informed Protsenko about the organization.
Comrade Protsenko approved the initiative from below and conveyed to his young colleagues the Bolshevik greetings and the first combat mission: to free prisoners of war from the May Day camp.
Greetings from their senior comrades inspired the Young Guards to military exploits, and they decided to exceed the party's task: to hang the former kulak and now policeman Ignat Fomin in a prominent place.

In November, the Germans begin a campaign to send young people to Germany. Therefore, the Young Guards decide to organize something like a theater and perform for the Germans.
While the Germans were having fun in the theatre, the Young Guards set fire to the labour exchange created by the Germans with lists of all candidates for sending to Germany.
The next day, mass arrests began in the city. Three underground members were also arrested. The leadership of the Young Guard decided to disband and disappear from the city. But it was too late, one of the arrested Young Guard members could not withstand the torture and gave up all his comrades.
Mass raids and arrests began in the city, and soon most of the Young Guards ended up in German dungeons. Having failed to obtain any information from the underground, the Gestapo threw the Young Guards into a deep shaft of a mine, just a few days before Krasnodon was liberated by the Red Army…
