Narrative:

The film takes place during the Great Patriotic War in the territory occupied by the enemy. The main character of the film is a young girl Elena - a Soviet intelligence officer, pseudonym "Birch", works as a translator in the German headquarters, obtaining especially important information for the center.

Due to her job description, "Birch" was forced to constantly be in the company of German officers, and she saw the contempt and disgust with which people treated her on the street. Elena understood that people did not know and should not know what she was really doing, but the thought that people considered her a traitor did not give the young intelligence officer any peace.

But one day, a wounded Soviet pilot who was bombing a railway station controlled by the Germans is captured by the Germans. The Nazis try to get information from him about the coordinates of the airfield where the Soviet bombers were based, but the pilot stubbornly remains silent, despite cruel torture.

Finally, the general himself decides to interrogate the prisoner with the help of Elena, who was his translator. At first, the general tries to win the pilot over and offers him money, but when that doesn't work, the general resorts to blackmail.

The German realized that the worst thing for this fanatic was not torture, and not even death. The worst thing for him was betrayal, so the general moved on to his final argument: he showed the pilot a mounted photograph of his fellow soldier shaking hands with the German general.

The general explains to the pilot that exactly the same photograph with him in it may soon appear in the hands of his comrades, and then for them he will not be a hero, but a traitor. However, even this did not help loosen the tongue of the Soviet hero, who is killed right before the eyes of "Beryozha".

But the feat of this man helped her believe in herself and in the important work that she was doing, because people may never know how a person accomplished his feat, the main thing is to remain a person to the end in front of yourself….
