Действие фильма «Их знали только в лицо» происходит во время Великой Отечественной войны в одном портовом городе, где расположилась база немецкого военно-морского флота. Эта база имела стратегическое значение, поэтому немцы предприняли все меры, исключавшие действие в порту советских подводных лодок.

However, soon German military and cargo ships began to blow up one after another in the port, which caused panic among both the sailors and the senior naval leadership.

At first, the Germans believed that Soviet submarines were somehow penetrating the port, and Vice-Admiral Reinhardt would feverishly remove several senior officers responsible for the port's defense from their posts. But then, after studying the defense scheme in detail, the admiral became convinced that it was not submarines that were working here, but enemy saboteurs located in the city, and therefore instructed Gestapo chief Hube to step up work to neutralize the local underground.

Soon Hube's men arrest several members of the underground, but they fail to find out from them the addresses, surnames and addresses of the rest of the underground members that the Gestapo is so interested in. Hube suspects all the Russians who worked in the port, and Hube takes a particularly close look at Galina Ortynskaya, who worked in the port commandant's office.

Only now Hube did not arrest Ortynskaya, but organized surveillance of her, hoping that Galina would lead them to the rest of the underground fighters. Ortynskaya felt the close attention of the Gestapo, but at that time she received a particularly important task from the center. The Soviet command was preparing to land a partisan assault force in the port, but for this they needed a map of the port mining. This very difficult and practically impossible task was to be carried out by Galina Ortynskaya, who was under the Gestapo's "cap"...
