The film takes place during the civil war in the former Yugoslavia between Serbs and Bosnians.
After several years of fratricidal war, under pressure from the international community, the parties sat down at the negotiating table and concluded a ceasefire. NATO forces, which had participated in the conflict on the side of the Bosnians, began to withdraw their troops.
But, despite the ceasefire and the possible imminent end of the conflict, the American contingent was in full combat readiness.
US Navy officer and F-18 fighter navigator Lieutenant Chris Burnett plans to end his military career after returning home, and he has submitted a report to his command about this.
The young romantic was not satisfied with the fact that the Americans took some kind of passive part in this war, avoided combat operations, only flew and observed.
However, there were still two weeks left before the final withdrawal of American troops, and the obstinate lieutenant had to fly out on another mission on Christmas Day.
The purpose of the flight is the same: observation and aerial photography of the coast.
Having completed the mission, the F-18 was ready to return to base, but the radar showed suspicious activity in the greenery on the shore, in the so-called demilitarized zone.

And although the terms of the peace treaty strictly prohibited US aircraft from flying over this zone, so as not to disrupt the already fragile peace, Burnet persuades his pilot Stackhouse to scan the area.
In the forest, the pilots saw significant forces of Serbian army fighters and took pictures of the area. The Serbs also noticed the American plane and fired two missiles at it.
The second missile shot down the F-18, and the pilots were forced to eject. Stackhouse was seriously injured in the fall, and Burnett was forced to leave his comrade for a few minutes to climb to a high place and contact the base.
From there Chris saw Stackhouse surrounded by Serbs, they asked the pilot a few questions, and then shot him in cold blood. Chris screamed in horror and was spotted by the Serbs, who immediately rushed in pursuit.
Having seized the moment, Chris gets in touch and reports what happened. The commander of the andriatic group, Admiral Leslie Reigart, decides to save his pilot by sending a detachment of marines to help him.
