Plot of the film Escape from the Gulag:

1944. Lieutenant Clemens Forel leaves for the Eastern Front. His wife and daughter see Clemens off at the train station. Saying goodbye to his family, Forel promises that he will be back by Christmas.

But Germany lost the war, and in July 1945, Clemens Forel was sentenced by a Soviet court to twenty-five years of forced labor.

Together with other convicts, he is transported across the vast expanse of Russia, to the northeast, to Cape Dezhnev, to a country called GULAG.

The convicts are transported in unheated freight cars and many die of cold and hunger. Finally, after several difficult months on the road, the train arrives at its destination.

But this did not make things any easier for the convicts; from morning until evening they work hard in the mines and almost no one has any hope that they will ever leave the penal servitude alive.

Forel attempted his first escape from the Gulag in 1947, after serving two years in the camp. But the first attempt was unsuccessful and Forel nearly died from torture.

In the hospital he meets the German doctor Staupfer who, like him, dreamed of escaping from the Gulag. But unlike Forel, he was well prepared for this.
