The film "Enemy at the Gates" takes place in late 1942 - early 1943. In the summer of 1942, the Germans begin a rapid offensive in the South, the ultimate goal of which was to capture the Caucasus with its rich oil reserves.
On the route of the German troops there was a major strategic object – the city of Stalingrad, which Hitler set the task of taking at any cost. After all, the city was located on the Volga – the largest waterway of the Soviet Union, along which strategic raw materials were supplied to the front. And besides, taking the city that bears the name of the leader of the USSR Stalin had a huge symbolic meaning for Hitler.
Understanding that the fate of the entire war was being decided in Stalingrad, the Soviet command decided to turn the city into an impregnable fortress: battles were being fought for every street, for every house. In urban battles, the effectiveness of snipers sharply increased, who knocked out the command staff with their well-aimed shots, and the loss of a commander in battle meant disorganization and panic in the soldiers' ranks.
Young shepherd from the Urals Vasily Zaitsev to become one of the best Soviet snipers. His fame quickly spread not only across the entire front, but also in the rear thanks to the activities of the army's political department and personally Commissar Danilov.
Leaflets and newspapers with Zaitsev's picture are distributed throughout Stalingrad and fall into enemy hands. One of Hitler's best snipers, Major Koenig, arrives from Berlin to Stalingrad to neutralize Zaitsev.
The sniper duel between the best German sniper and the Soviet shepherd from the Urals lasts for several months. The major expertly provokes Zaitsev and tries to lure him into a trap, but yesterday's shepherd bypasses them so skillfully that it earns the respect of his enemy. But Zaitsev felt that sooner or later Koenig would succeed, because he had never had to fight with such an experienced opponent...
